SUMMARY:23rd Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis International Symposium (PYRO2020)
DESCRIPTION:The 23rd edition of the International Conference on Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis (PYRO 2020) will be held in Ghent\, Belgium. \n \nDelegates from academia\, research institutes and industry are going to present their latest results and define the needs for future developments This is done in sessions with oral and poster presentations\, with ample opportunities for discussion.\nThe program includes topics varying from fundamental studies and advanced analytical techniques\, up to pyrolysis applications in a commercial setting. The conference is not limited merely to applied biomass pyrolysis for renewable energy; it will also be dedicated for a significant part to the thermal decomposition of materials like coal\, plastics / polymers\, and composites. Products of pyrolysis can be used for (renewable) fuels and advanced materials; valuable green chemicals can be extracted or synthesized from them and\, if properly characterized\, they can lead to identification of the parent material.\nIt is the first time that Belgium is hosting the PYRO conference. Previous conferences were held in France (3)\, Germany (3)\, Spain (3)\, England (2)\, Austria (2)\, Hungary (2)\, Japan (2)\, The Netherlands (2)\, Italy (1) and Sweden (1). The latest editions held in Birmingham (2014)\, Nancy (2016) and Kyoto (2018) were chaired by Tony Bridgewater\, Anthony Dufour and Hajime Ohtani respectively; they have been very successful with an increasing number of participants from all over the world. This time\, the organizers are again expecting over 300 participants\, and they intend to accommodate around 80 oral plus 150 to 200 poster presentations. The conference venue is magnificent: “Het Pand”\, situated in the historical center of Ghent\, is an ancient monastery (13th century) of the order of the Dominicans\, which has been renovated completely. The University of Ghent is using it currently for academic meetings and the organization of symposia and congresses. It houses – apart from a large number of congress rooms – various museum collections\, exhibition areas and a restaurant. \nYour host institute\, the University of Ghent\, was founded in 1810. Over the past two centuries it has developed towards a highly-ranked academic society\, with 11 faculties occupied by 15\,000 staff and 44\,000 students. The PYRO2020 conference organizers are working in the Department of Green Chemistry and Technology of the Bioscience faculty\, and at the Laboratory of Chemical Technology of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Together\, they have an extensive experience in pyrolysis research and built a significant network of international collaboration. All members of the pyrolysis community are cordially invited to spend one week in the spectacular town of Ghent\, to enjoy the presentation of new pyrolysis results in the first place\, but also to establish collaborations by meeting new colleagues and seeing old friends again. \nThe organizers are eagerly looking forward to welcome you all at PYRO2020.

SUMMARY:Webinar “From biomass to biobased products: #1 Choosing the right feedstock strategy”
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of a series of four webinars organized as part of the Bio4Products project\, which is testing the feasibility of a pyrolysis-based biorefinery. Its aim? To replace oil with renewable raw materials. \nThe webnar will take place on Thursday 26th of September 2019 between 11:00 and 12:00\, Brussels time. \nYou can find out more information about this webinar and the registration process here. \n  \n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nFor any bio-based project\, identifying the right feedstock strategy is a key aspect. One of the first steps to make the project viable is to secure a continuous and long-term supply of biomass. This ensures the plant runs efficiently and does not experience interruptions. \nBut biomass availability is complex to estimate. It is necessary to assess which feedstock is available close by to avoid high transport costs. The feedstock must also have sufficient quality and specific characteristics to meet the technical requirements of the plant. The cost and sustainability of the chosen biomass are equally crucial. \nThis webinar will explore all these key aspects drawing from the long-standing experience of three experts in biomass feedstocks. To join the webinar please register using the green button above. Registered participants will receive by email a link to join the webinar 1-2 hours before the scheduled start time. \n  \nSPEAKERS\nSonja Germer\, Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) \nInnovations in lignocellulosic biomass production: effects on costs\, sustainability and acceptance \nLars Wietschel\, University of Augsburg \nAgroforestry residue potentials in the European Union: current status and future perspectives \nBart Tambuyser\, CAPAX Biobased Development \nVirtual Pyrolysis Plant Locations: Availability and quality of biomass \nChair: Bert Van de Beld\, BTG Biomass Technology Group \n  \nTHE BIO4PRODUCTS PROJECT\nThis webinar is being organised as part of the Bio4Products project\, which is testing the feasibility of a fast pyrolysis based biorefinery concept. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 723070.

SUMMARY:EU-Japan Small-scale Biomass Gasification Seminar
DESCRIPTION:16 January 2019 – Higashihiroshima City and Art Center Kurara\n \nHosted by the 14th Conference on Biomass Science and co- organized by the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition with the support of the Free University of Bozen and The Japan Institute of Energy. \nIn recent years\, the use of wood and wood residues for heat and power production from small-scale decentralized plants has increased in Japan\, thanks to the growing interest in renewable energy and to the adoption of a supportive National policy framework. \nAt the same time\, ongoing research and technology developments across Europe led to significant improvements to small-scale biomass gasification systems and to the implementation of several commercial applications in Europe and worldwide. However\, continuous research is still needed to tackle some issues related to the optimization of both processes and technologies in this sector. \nThis seminar will gather researchers and professionals from Europe and from Japan to share updates and knowledge on the topic of combined heat and power production using small-scale gasification technologies\, promoting national and international research networks. \nThe presentations will introduce the recent technological and research trends in small-scale biomass gasification technologies\, the points of strength and the critical issues to address\, for an efficient and sustainable production of energy and materials. Solutions and strategies to increase the flexibility of the process will be discussed\, such as load modulation and fuel flexibility\, as well as effective pathways for the management and the valorisation of gasification by-products such as char and tar. Methodologies for plant monitoring and for the assessment of the energetic and environmental performance of relevant gasification systems will be also presented\, given their importance for different aspects such as the commissioning and authorization of plants and the development of new designs. \nCase studies of small-scale gasification applications across Europe will be presented\, \nScientific talks will be complemented by research-oriented technical presentations from technology companies to bring the main stakeholders´ interests together. \nClick here to read the schedule
