SUMMARY:REFAB 2018: High-tech Strategy for a Sustainable Biomass Supply
DESCRIPTION:New conference in Cologne\, 1 and 2 October 2018\, highlights advanced technologies for food and biomass production of the future.\nThe conference “Revolution in Food and Biomass Production” (REFAB) in Cologne on 1-2 October 2018 will bring together all future-oriented experts from companies\, start-ups and research to have a look at the future of food and biomass production. \nWhat high-tech strategies are emerging on the horizon to sustainably supply a growing world population with healthy food – and at the same time provide industry with sustainable biomass for environmentally friendly products? The conference gives a unique opportunity to meet the pioneers and forerunners of the future of food and biomass production. \nFrom REFAB 01/02/18 Press Release by nova-Institut GmbH. \n“For the first time in history\, we understand in detail how a healthy soil works\, what role bacteria and fungi play in the nutrient uptake of plants and trees. We know how to achieve healthy and productive soils with biostimulants while nitrogen-fixing bacteria will reduce the use of additional nitrogen. Precision farming with Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, robots and drones can help to fertilise and protect plants more efficiently and with lower environmental impacts. Latest gene editing technologies can improve plant ingredients and make better use of solar radiation with an updated photosynthesis system. \nMariculture or marine farming is about to become an important sector. This means the cultivation of marine organisms for feed\, food and other products in the open ocean and enclosed sections of the ocean\, in tanks\, ponds or raceways filled with seawater. Forestry will supply a wide range of chemicals and bio-based products in biorefineries\, including environmentally friendly textile fibres. \nWith indoor farming in our kitchens and vertical farming on an industrial scale\, healthy food can be produced efficiently and locally. Insects\, algae and bacteria can be used to develop new sources of protein. Bacteria can even digest CO2 to produce feed proteins for aquaculture. Institute for Ecology and Innovation  \nOrganic farming as well as smallholders will also strongly benefit from many of these new developments and increase their efficiency while respecting their original ideals and principles. Food and biomass production will be possible even under the most extreme conditions: In dry areas\, “greening the desert” will become reality through solar technology\, deep water or desalination plants as well as hydroponics. In the icy north\, productivity can be increased through LED lighted greenhouses and some technologies will even enable food production in space stations\, on the moon and on Mars.” \nPlease find information on the Call for Papers\, sponsoring opportunities and other important details on this website. www.refab.info \n

SUMMARY:9th Biomass Pellets Trade & Power
DESCRIPTION:Asia biomass markets powerhouse meet in Tokyo. \nSince 2008\, CMT’s Biomass series evolved from and into inter-regional biomass trade and supply\, biomass power projects\, developments in biofuels\, biomass use regulations and more. The series traveled across Europe\, America and Asia – from Rotterdam to Brussels to Atlanta to Seoul to Jakarta and last year to Tokyo. Pegged as the ‘Global Biomass Buyer-Supplier Meet’ it has connected over thousands of wood pellet\, wood chip and agricultural biomass (e.g. Palm Oil\, etc) producers & traders\, power utilities\, and technology providers. \nOver 800 biomass power projects\, generating more than 16GW\, were approved in Japan by last October. Total biomass demand is projected to almost triple from present rates to 23 million tons in 2025. Wood pellet demand will jump from 500\,000 tons to 9.5 million tons in 2025. The Japanese government has since then stopped the issuance of set price Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) subsidies for new application and replaced with a new tendering system.\nWith current state of domestic supply infrastructure as well as from Canada\, USA & SEAsia – this demand growth raises concerns over biomass fuel availability and sustainability. How will the Japanese buyers strategize and ensure that “sustainability-certified” biomass are sourced on term contracts (wood pellet\, wood chips\, PKS) to feed this wave of massive requirement?\nIn South Korea\, biomass sourcing competition rose as IPP and biomass conversion capacity in South Korean grew\, resulting soaring imports of wood pellet. Wood pellet demand is also expected to increase\, given the rise in new biomass-consuming facilities scheduled to come on line in the next few years. Imports could reach over 2 million tons this year as utilities continue to transition to a broader use of biomass. The volatile REC prices discourage buyers to engage in long-term offtake agreement. With relatively lenient sustainability criteria\, this demand growth has spurred rapid growth in production capacity in Vietnam to satisfy South Korean tenders. And on a brighter note\, biomass power activities are growing in Taiwan\, will the domestic agricultural residues be sufficient to feed the boilers?

SUMMARY:3rd Green & Sustainable Chemistry Conference
DESCRIPTION:As the world’s population edges towards 9 billion\, the strain on our planet’s resources is progressively increasing. In both the developed and developing world there is a growing demand for food\, manufactured goods and improved access to clean water and fuel. The products of human manufacture\, even those produced to benefit society\, can have negative effects on human health and the environment.\nThe United Nations General Assembly has addressed these challenges in its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Contributions of chemistry\, both in science and industries\, are indispensable to meet the SDGs but such efforts will only be successful if they contribute in a sustainable and not just green manner to sustainability.\nOther conferences in this field are focused mainly on the synthesis and technical aspects\, however to contribute in a long-term\, viable and globally applicable manner to the SDGs a much broader approach and exchange is necessary. The goal of the conference is therefore to bring together international researchers from academia and industry\, from authorities and other institutions to communicate and share the latest developments across the broad and diverse fields of green and sustainable chemistry.

SUMMARY:ETIP Bioenergy 8th Stakeholder Plenary Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What is the contribution of biofuels to achieve the 2 degree target of the international climate policy?\nThere is a global agreement to combat fossil carbon emissions and keep global temperature increase below 2 degree C. Each economic sector needs to take its share in this. Transport represents almost one quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions; these have been less declining than in other sectors. \nBiofuels are one of the key options under discussion to decarbonise the transport sector\, with other alternatives gaining importance recently. The Impact Assessment of the EC in preparation of RED2 (Brussels\, 30.11.2016 SWD (2016) 418 final PART 1/4\, p. 36) shows the contribution required from biofuels. Modelling looking at options to achieve the 2030 climate and energy targets for the EU\, indicates the share of biofuels in transports is projected to increase up to 7.8% of total transport energy demand by 2030 (from 3.7% in 2010). Beyond 2030\, modelling suggests the share of biofuels in liquid and gaseous transport fuels will need to increase significantly further\, reaching around 46 % by 2050 (equal to 36-37% of total transport energy demand when electromobility is included). In particular\, biofuels are required to decarbonize the heavy duty\, waterborne transport and aviation sectors. \nHowever\, last years’ debates about 1st and 2nd generation biofuels\, fuels vs food\, ILUC and sustainability created a period of uncertainty and abide for industry involved in the biofuels sector. For biofuels to be part of the solution\, it will be crucial to address sustainability issues adequately. \nThe conference will give a status review of R&I within the biofuels sector. It will also discuss how various political decisions impact the sector and finally the conference will put biofuels in comparison with some key alternatives. What type of impacts do the various alternatives have in a “well to wheel” perspective? This will be discussed with representatives of the key industrial sectors involved. \nAgenda available here \nRegister here \nImportant note – Registration is free of charge.
