{"id":1503,"date":"2013-07-15T15:26:06","date_gmt":"2013-07-15T13:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/?p=1503"},"modified":"2018-05-02T17:14:12","modified_gmt":"2018-05-02T15:14:12","slug":"1503","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/1503\/","title":{"rendered":"3.8\u20ac billion Public-Private Partnership launched to accelerate the deployment of biobased products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Bridge2020-PPP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1504\" title=\"Bridge2020 PPP\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Bridge2020-PPP-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Bridge2020-PPP-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Bridge2020-PPP-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Forty-eight large and small companies grouped under the <a href=\"http:\/\/bridge2020.eu\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biobased Industry Consortium<\/a>, have joined forces with the European Commission to set up an unprecedented Public-Private Partnership worth \u20ac1 billion EU funds from the new Horizon 2020 program and \u20ac2.8 billion to accelerate the deployment of biobased products in Europe by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The Biobased Industries PPP is part of the European Commission\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-13-668_en.htm?locale=en\" target=\"_blank\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Innovation and Investment Package <\/span><\/em><\/a>that was released on July 10th. The package is intended to stimulate the European economy, create jobs and tackle major societal challenges through research, innovation and deployment.<\/p>\n<p>The objectives of the initiative are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leverage Europe\u2019s biobased research and technology;<\/li>\n<li>Develop the under-utilised potential of agriculture and forestry residues;<\/li>\n<li>Replace oil-based chemicals and materials with biodegradable and biobased ones;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Generate new industries, revitalise others, and create thousands of jobs;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Diversify and grow farmers\u2019 incomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To realise this potential, the PPP will capitalise on Europe\u2019s innovation and technological leadership to bring biobased solutions to commercial scale.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the Biobased Industries Consortium:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Berry Wiersum, CEO of Sappi <\/strong>said:\u00a0<em>\u201cThis is a unique partnership that places sustainability at the heart of all economic, social and industrial activities. It is about realising the untapped potential of biomass and waste, to\u00a0deliver sustainable growth in Europe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Peder Holk Nielsen, CEO of Novozymes <\/strong>added:\u00a0<em>\u201cThe Biobased Industries PPP is important for Europe to remain competitive in the global bioeconomy race. It is an opportunity for re-industrialisation and for reversing the investment trend currently going to other regions of the world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Guy Talbourdet, CEO of Roquette Fr\u00e8res <\/strong>commented:\u00a0<em>\u201cThe Biobased Industries Initiative comes at a critical time for European development of the bioeconomy. Such a PPP will accelerate the market entry of new biobased products \u201cmade in Europe\u201d in the so-called biorefineries. The use of locally grown biomass will not only enable growth and jobs in rural areas across European regions, but it will also reduce the EU\u2019s reliance on fossil or proteins imports.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Feike Sijbesma<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>CEO of Royal DSM <\/strong>stated:\u00a0<em>\u201cThis is the start of a promising future for Europe.
