{"id":6777,"date":"2018-07-30T10:24:54","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T08:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/?p=6777"},"modified":"2018-07-30T11:49:34","modified_gmt":"2018-07-30T09:49:34","slug":"eubce-2018-student-awardee-presentations-research-insights-and-tips-for-a-good-presentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/eubce-2018-student-awardee-presentations-research-insights-and-tips-for-a-good-presentation\/","title":{"rendered":"EUBCE 2018 Student Awards: Research Insights and Tips for a Good Presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The EUBCE Student Awards are delivered in recognition of the most remarkable and outstanding research work in the field of Biomass to encourage high-quality work among young researchers.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As for the past edition of EUBCE,\u00a0with regard to the\u00a0next <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eubce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">EUBCE 2019<\/a> in Lisbon<\/strong> young researchers may\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eubce.com\/conference\/prizes-and-awards\/student-awards-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">apply to Students Awards Prizes\u00a02019<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and they can submit their papers in application\u00a0to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eubce.com\/conference\/call-for-papers.html\" target=\"_blank\">Calls for Papers 2019 <\/a><\/strong>as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Within every European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) prizes are chosen by a special scientific committee and awarded during the Closing Session.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here some words by <strong>Jean Fran\u00e7ois Dallemand<\/strong>, from the EC Joint Research Centre Institute for Energy -Renewable Energy Unit-, as EUBCE Students Awards 2018 Coordinator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_NqTuALOJGA?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>As BE-Sustainable Magazine we asked some<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eubce.com\/conference\/prizes-and-awards\/student-awards-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">Students Awards winners<\/a>\u00a0<strong>of the 26th EUBCE about their research work, as well as some good advice in order to give a good presentation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Rasmus_Bramstoft_pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-6784 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Rasmus_Bramstoft_pic.jpg\" alt=\"rasmus_bramstoft_pic\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Rasmus Bramstoft \u2013 <\/strong>Technical University of Denmark, DTU Management Engineering \u2013 presented a research about<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etaflorence.it\/proceedings\/index.asp?detail=15355\" target=\"_blank\">integrated energy systems envisaging biomass resources<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My field of research is about modelling of integrated energy systems i.e. power, heat, gas, and transport. The research which I presented at the EUBCE 2018 addresses the arising question of the future role of biomass in an effective, cost-efficient, and sustainable transition of the Danish energy system. A novel modelling framework was developed, by combining a holistic energy system perspective with detailed modelling of bioenergy resources.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The results from the model represent the socio-economic optimal systems, where investments and operations optimisation are facilitated while taking into account the spatial and temporal energy system integration. Such results may provide remarkable contributions to the related research field and can be used to support stakeholders and policymakers in strategic decision making.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Photo-M\u00aa-Cruz-Amor\u00f3s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-6783 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Photo-M\u00aa-Cruz-Amor\u00f3s.jpg\" alt=\"photo-ma-cruz-amoros\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Maria de la Cruz Amor\u00f3s Serrano <\/strong>\u2013 University of Alcal\u00e1 de Henares, IMIDRA, Spain \u2013 talked about<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etaflorence.it\/proceedings\/index.asp?detail=15044\" target=\"_blank\">environmental issues of Elm energy crop<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who made it possible that these trials came out ahead. \u00a0My research work is related to the generation of plants for sustainable gardening and non-agricultural food crop species. I am currently preparing my Phd thesis about biomass production and the environmental effects of Elm energy crop within IMIDRA (Instituto Madrile\u00f1o de Investigaci\u00f3n y Desarrollo Rural, Agrario y Alimentario).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As Ulmus pumila is a woody plant that has been generally used as short rotation energy crop, I am studying the implantation of phenotypically-selected material. Within other studies, the vegetative material which has been used for the establishment of energy crops of Elm has consisted in plant growing up by seeds. Such vegetative material is a very heterogeneous crop, thus, it is necessary to study its vegetative propagation and its subsequent behaviour in the implantation.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Clement.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-6785 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Clement.jpg\" alt=\"clement\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Clement Vanneste-Ibarcq<\/strong> \u2013 CEA, Liten \u2013 Bioresources preparation laboratory, FRANCE \u2013 addressed the<strong> biomass powder flow issues in the context of gasification process.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am working in the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Commission (CEA Grenoble), a public research centre. My research focuses on the flow of biomass powders in the context of the gasification process within entrained flow reactor. This process requires the biomass to be finely ground, but biomass powders present a very low flowability, leading to flow issues (arching in silos for example).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The aim of this research is to propose a new granulation method to improve the flowability of these powders, which could lead to the development of entrained flow gasification at a larger scale.\u00a0It was a demonstration of the technical feasibility of this new granulation method, at both lab and pilot scale. The next step will be to demonstrate the economic interest of such method, compared with other flow-improvement methods, such as torrefaction, so that results may help the industry to solve biomass powder flow issues.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Asked with the question \u201cwhat would you recommend for a good presentation?\u201d, each of them provided with some personal and valuable hint<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Maria de la Cruz Amor\u00f3s Serrano <\/strong>underlined the feelings of passion and motivation by stating that<b>, <\/b><em>for a good research presentation is necessary above all that you like what you are doing and a lot of effort to do it the best possible.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Rasmus Bramstoft <\/strong>highlighted the necessity of identifying oneself with the audience in order to better convey the message: <em>It was important for me to make a presentation, which made the complicated and comprehensive research easily understandable with clear key messages, such as, biomass plays a key role in future Danish energy systems, where the finite biomass resource, in particular, is needed to decarbonise the transportation sector<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The need for sympathizing with the public is pointed out by <strong>Clement Vanneste-Ibarcq<\/strong> too<strong>, <\/strong>as he affirms the necessity of putting<em>\u00a0<\/em>oneself in the position of the audience<em>: Will the listeners understand the subject, even as non-specialists of the domain?
