But by only eating the fillets, and discarding the by-products, such as heads, skin and backbones, we miss out on many valuable nutrients that can benefit our health and fitness.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>Today, we don\u2019t reap all the benefits of the fish we consume,<\/em>\u201d\u00a0says project coordinator Katerina Kousoulaki.\u00a0\u201c<em>While we often eat small fish like sardines or anchovies whole, it\u2019s trickier to bring by-products from larger fish, such as bass, cod or salmon, to the dinner table.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The EU-funded project AQUABIOPRO-<em>FIT<\/em>\u00a0aims to bring proteins and bioactives from aquaculture and fisheries by-products into our food chain through nutritional supplements. By making use of sustainable processing technologies, nutritional components will be up-concentrated, while maintaining product quality and minimising waste. This will result in a more efficient use of biomass resources and the development of products that offer health benefits to consumers \u2013 with low environmental impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ACQuabio1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6996\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ACQuabio1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"acquabio\" width=\"728\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ACQuabio1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ACQuabio1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ACQuabio1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ACQuabio1.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Extremely underutilised<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today,\u00a0<\/span><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/a-i5555e.pdf\">around half of all fish biomass is wasted<\/a><\/u>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">despite their richness in proteins and bioactive compounds. Of the 5 million tons of by-products from the fishing industry, only some are used for feed, pet food and food supplements. The rest is discarded. Consequently, this potential source of beneficial components is extremely underutilised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">AQUABIOPRO-<em>FIT<\/em>\u00a0will take these residual by-products and convert them into high-quality, functional ingredients using efficient and sustainable processing methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>We will develop processes to isolate and stabilise these ingredients, so they can be added to food, drink and feed products,<\/em>\u201d\u00a0Kousoulaki explains.\u00a0\u201c<em>Their functionality and efficacy will, of course, be assessed through state-of-the-art pre-clinical models and clinical tests.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fish heads, backbones, skin and intestines are sources of valuable proteins and peptides, such as collagen and gelatine, lipids and minerals. Tunicates, also known as sea-squirts, are rich in cellulose and protein. Aside from their nutritional quality, these ingredients also exhibit interesting therapeutic functionalities that can be used to tackle depression, ageing and inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acquabio1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6997\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acquabio1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"acquabio1\" width=\"728\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acquabio1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acquabio1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acquabio1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acquabio1.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Circular economy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The extracts to be investigated include protein isolates,\u00a0polyunsaturated fatty acids\u00a0(PUFAs), vitamins, minerals and other bioactive compounds. Since they are in their natural form, they have greater bioavailability and thus are superior to synthetically derived supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>AQUABIOPRO-FIT enables a circular economy<\/em>\u201d the project coordinator adds. \u201c<em>It unifies the largest fisheries nations in Europe, building bridges between producers of potentially valuable marine by-product biomass and European citizens through innovations, intervention studies and training<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The outcomes of the project will be used to stimulate different sectors of the food industry \u2013 from aquaculture to food processors and ultimately finished product manufacturers.
