{"id":8622,"date":"2019-11-11T09:00:20","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T08:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/?p=8622"},"modified":"2019-11-11T09:31:49","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T08:31:49","slug":"online-selection-of-environmental-criteria-for-urban-furniture-the-guf-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/online-selection-of-environmental-criteria-for-urban-furniture-the-guf-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"Online selection of environmental criteria for urban furniture &#8211; The Guf Tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Guf Tool is an online tool developed through the Life Future Project to select and assess environmental criteria for urban furniture in green public procurement and to compare its impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Guf Tool within the Life Future Project<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <strong>European project LIFE FUTURE<\/strong> (\u2018Sustainable Urban FUrniTURE: Tool Design to Perform Environmental Assessments in the Green Procurement Framework\u201d) aimed to enhance the <strong>green public procurement of urban furniture products<\/strong> through the implementation of specific environmental <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/life-future-project.eu\/\">criteria<\/a>. With this aim, an <strong>online tool<\/strong> was developed to select criteria and assess the <strong>environmental impact of different urban furniture products<\/strong> in a simple but scientifically rigorous manner: the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/lifefuture.uji.es\/\">GUF Too<\/a>l\u00a0(\u201cGreen Urban Furniture Tool\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8623 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-1.png\" alt=\"guf-1\" width=\"841\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-1.png 841w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-1-600x439.png 600w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-1-300x219.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 841px) 100vw, 841px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The European project LIFE FUTURE was carried out between 2015 and 2018 in Belgium, Croatia and Spain (especially the Region of Valencia). The beneficiaries of this project, which was funded by the European Union through the LIFE Environment and Resource Efficiency programme, were:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aimplas.es\/\">AIMPLAS<\/a><\/strong>, Plastics Technology Centre: based in Paterna, Spain, AIMPLAS coordinated the project and participated in the selection of environmental criteria and urban furniture products, operation and validation of the tool and dissemination of the results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>ACR+<\/strong> (<em>Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management<\/em>): based in Brussels, Belgium, this body was responsible for the dissemination plan and interaction with other projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>AIJU<\/strong> (<em>Technological Institute for Children\u2019s Products and Leisure<\/em>): based in Alcoi, Spain, the role of AIJU was to programme and design the online tool and validate its operation, in addition to disseminating tasks and preparing promotional materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>LAS NAVES<\/strong>: based in Valencia, Spain, this innovation centre was responsible for preparing and demonstrating the tool through Valencia City Council, the green public procurement of products and the socioeconomic analysis of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Koprivnica City Council, Croatia<\/strong>: the council was an active beneficiary of the process to demonstrate green public procurement through use of the tool and was also responsible for translating the contents into Croatian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Universitat Jaume I, Castell\u00f3n<\/strong>, Spain: this university developed the methodology for weighting environmental impacts and analysed the results of the project from an environmental perspective. It was also responsible for internal tool programming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8624 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-2.png\" alt=\"guf-2\" width=\"1650\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-2.png 1650w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-2-600x146.png 600w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-2-300x73.png 300w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-2-1024x249.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1650px) 100vw, 1650px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Guf Tool&#8217;s Methodology<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first task in developing the GUF Tool was to select and describe the criteria potentially applicable to urban furniture products and to select the type of products likely to meet these criteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The<strong> 40 criteria proposed<\/strong> to improve the environmental impact of furniture products, including the EU directives themselves and references to indoor and outdoor furniture, were<strong> narrowed down to 19<\/strong>. These criteria were grouped into different categories and defined in depth before being classified into specifications and awards criteria (i.e. mandatory and optional).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8625 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-3.jpg\" alt=\"guf-3\" width=\"658\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-3.jpg 658w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-3-600x460.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-3-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These environmental criteria were assigned to <strong>different urban furniture types<\/strong>, depending on their applicability. Urban furniture products that require energy to operate, such as streetlights, were excluded from this selection. The LIFE FUTURE project consortium chose <strong>15 different urban furniture products<\/strong>, in addition to a packaging category, to which these19 environmental criteria were assigned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8626 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-4.jpg\" alt=\"guf-4\" width=\"458\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-4.jpg 458w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-4-300x267.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Through these extensively defined criteria, which are assigned to each type of urban furniture product, public bodies can easily create a document with the criteria they want to include in an urban furniture tender and those that are potentially applicable. They simply log into the GUF Tool, choose the urban furniture product to be tendered, uncheck the criteria they want to exclude and create a PDF document with the criteria to be included in the tender documentation. The GUF Tool also provides a follow-up document to check products\u2019 compliance with these criteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the urban furniture product that a public body wishes to purchase has selected any of these mandatory criteria in the tender, its non-compliance discards it to be ineligible for the tender. Optional criteria, on the other hand, are used to support the environmental assessment process and complement the mandatory criteria. Urban furniture manufacturers and suppliers can therefore log into GUF Tool, search for active tenders by product type or location, and offer their products according to the criteria established.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8629 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7.png\" alt=\"guf-7\" width=\"858\" height=\"862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7.png 858w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7-600x603.png 600w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7-90x90.png 90w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-7-64x64.png 64w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Companies that participate in tenders by offering their products must fill in a form available in the GUF Tool, where they are required to include numerical values and documentation to verify their products\u2019 compliance with the criteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The data provided by the supplier allows the GUF Tool to assess the environmental impact of each product by means of a life-cycle assessment (LCA) and the weighting of these impacts, thus resulting in a score worth a maximum of 100 points that reveals the product\u2019s environmental advantages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8630 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8.jpg\" alt=\"guf-8\" width=\"567\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8.jpg 567w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8-90x90.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.besustainablemagazine.com\/cms2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/guf-8-64x64.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The GUF Tool works behind a visible interface and performs these calculations based on the<strong> multi-criteria decision analysis method known as TOPSIS<\/strong> (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.scs.2018.10.011\">Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution<\/a>), by taking a result considered ideal for each criterion as a reference point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When a product is given a score, urban furniture manufacturers can find out how close their product came to being the most environmentally friendly option and how others fared, although offers are anonymous.
